Sometimes known as “alphabet soup,” our country has a lot of intelligence agencies. When you’re looking to put one of these agencies in your work, how do you know which is the right one? What do they all do? Please join us in welcoming Kate Thornton, retired US Army Counterintelligence Agent and defense contractor (as well as author), who will present “Security Clearances and National Intelligence Entities.”

In our afternoon session, Writers Studio teacher Phil Ivory will present “The Craft of Dark Fiction.” From William Faulkner to Shirley Jackson to Margaret Atwood, writers have achieved memorable effects by putting characters in extreme situations and evoking sensations of fear, dread, awe and horror. During this lecture, we’ll look at horror not as something confined to the macabre shelf but as an emotion that will add power and resonance to any material regardless of genre. We’ll examine how to use description to evoke a dark and lingering mood, craft the best narrator to evoke singular emotional effects, and lay the groundwork for readers to have a powerful emotional experience while never telling them what to feel. Come take a writing journey to the dark side, and return stronger than you were before.
