February 13th meeting: Storing Evidence; What Are You Reading?

REMINDER: THIS MONTH ONLY, we will be meeting at U Like Oriental Buffet at 5101 N Oracle Rd (Just north of River, west side of the road, in the old Hometown Buffet location). We will have coffee on hand, and want to reassure that there is more than just Chinese food in the buffet, so if you’re not big on Asian food you’ll likely still find something to suit your tastes.

ALSO: There is no meeting in March due to the Tucson Festival of Books. You can still volunteer at our TFOB booth! See Kay Lesh at the meeting to sign up!

We see and hear a lot about collecting evidence. But what happens after it’s initially collected? Join us in welcoming Bill Brantley, a Quality Assurance Manager for the Tucson Police Department’s Property & Evidence Section, as he walks us through collection, packaging, submission, receiving, and storage of property and evidence, as well as the history of the unit and changes in the policies of evidence storage.

We’ll have a delicious lunch, and a fun book drawing.

In our afternoon session, we’ll be discussing what we’re reading, and why. Reading is a vital part of any writer’s ongoing development. In a recent interview, author Steven King discussed reading as a way to help writers hone their craft, and referred to good books as “stories that light up your mind.”

What stories light up your mind? Who is your favorite author and what do you find engaging in her/his work? Bring a sample of an especially well-written passage if you want, to illustrate why this author speaks to you.

On the flip side, are there authors that make you cringe? Is there someone you used to enjoy and now avoid?

We are mystery writers, but most of us probably don’t limit ourselves to mysteries alone. Come prepared to share any genre with us.

RSVP by 9:30 am, Wednesday, February 10th to save your place. $25 non-members includes lunch. $20 RSVP’d members. Pay at the door. RSVP by clicking the button on http://www.meetup.com/Arizona-Mystery-Writers-of-Tucson/ or email amwmembershipchair@gmail.com. See you there!
