Sharing Our Lockdown Reading

What do mystery writers do in lockdown? They try to write, but they definitely read!

For the next Mystery Writers online meeting, let’s share what we’ve been reading.  Grab your latest favorite so you can hold a book up to the camera for everyone to see. And tell us why you liked it.  Maybe we’ll all discover some new gems.

Join us on Zoom, Saturday, May 9th, 10 am. The meeting link will be sent to our newsletter list of members and active participants. Mark your calendar!

(It’s ok to share the zoom link with trusted friends who are interested in mysteries).

Helping Others

Sometimes even Mystery Writers might need help paying rent or utilities. If you know someone who does, you can share this list:

The Urban League:  https://tucsonurbanleague.org/

Interfaith Community Services: https://www.icstucson.org/

Arizona Department of Economic Security:  https://des.az.gov/services/basic-needs/shelter-housing/utility-assistance

St. Mary’s Food Bank: https://www.firstfoodbank.org/get-help/

Tucson Collaborative Community Care — known as TC-3. Donate to https://www.tmcaz.com/foundation/ and designate (TC-3).

If you want to donate to one of these organizations, the AMW Board suggests that you mark your donation “In the Name of Arizona Mystery Writers.”  You still get your tax deduction, and it spreads the word that our organization is trying to be helpful.

All the charities listed are tax-deductible and all except the last one are “QCOs,” which means you can take a tax credit of up to $400 per person (better than a tax deduction) for any donation you make in 2020. See a complete list of QCOs at https://azdor.gov/sites/default/files/media/CREDITS_2020_qco.pdf

CONTEST NEWS!

The winners of the 2019 AMW Mary Ann Hutchison Story Contest for Youth have been notified and their prize money sent ($50 for First, $25 for Second, and $15 for Third). Also sent were acknowledgments to over a dozen “Honorable Mentions.”  Rhema Sayers, Youth Contest Coordinator, says feedback she received is that entrants were delighted to have the judges’ comments.

It’s not too early for you to be drafting your own entry for the 2020 AMW Adult Story Contest. The deadline for submissions has been extended until July 15th. Don’t forget, whether or not you’re a prize winner, you get written feedback from the judges.  See the contest requirements at https://arizonamysterywriters.com/?page_id=1449.

Zoom you at the May 9th meeting!
