Public defenders get a bad rap, both on TV and in the media. But what is it really like to work in the public defender’s office? What motivates the attorneys who work there, and how do they deal with the negative perceptions? Bring your questions and join us in welcoming U of A College of Law alumni Joel Feinman from the Pima County Public Defender’s Office as he shares anecdotes and fills us in on what it’s like to work defense on felony cases.
We’ll have a selection of delicious lunch entrees to choose from, and a fun book raffle.
In the afternoon session, our very own Elizabeth Gunn, author of the Jake Hines and Sarah Burke series, will present “That’s My Story and I’m Sticking to It – (usually).” Liz will share insider angst about her love/hate relationship with outlines, the deep need for semi-colons that she can’t seem to shake, and why the first chapter has to get re-written twenty times before an editor ever sees it. She will also cover the pros and cons of writing series – how you build a cast of characters, what to do with the ones you get sick and tired of, how much description to give them every time so new readers aren’t confused but faithful readers don’t get bored and quit. And finally, the divine reassurance one gains by keeping good notes and lists – essential if aging brains are going to stay in the game. She’ll furnish samples of the lists she uses to keep herself organized.
