Serial killers are a staple of mystery and thriller writing. But what part of the popular conception of serial killers is genuine, and what are just creative liberties? Join us in welcoming Marsheila Rockwell and Jeffrey J. Mariotte, long-time authors with more than 60 books between them, who will discuss the psychology and neuroscience behind serial killers and mass murderers. Their recent collaborative novel, 7 SYKOS, deals with advances in neuroscience — science fiction that’s rapidly becoming science fact — and how brain structure contributes to criminal violence. They’ll share the research they did, what they learned, and more from decades of studying crime and criminals.
We’ll have a delicious lunch, and the announcement of our short story contest winners!
In our afternoon session, author and writing coach Ethel Lee-Miller will present “Don’t Shoot the Messenger: Unless you are a Mystery Writer.” Create characters who are believable, compelling, and have what it takes to carry the message, move your story forward, and are unforgettable. Ethel Lee-Miller uses her training in counseling and experiences in life to cull those quirky, intriguing, likable and not so likable traits in characters that capture the attention of readers. Walk away with surefire ideas that will get your characters talking.
RSVP by 9:30 am, Wednesday, September 7th to save your place. $30 non-members includes lunch. $25 RSVP’d AMW members. Pay at the door. RSVP by clicking the button on http://www.meetup.com/Arizona-Mystery-Writers-of-Tucson/ or email amwmembershipchair@gmail.com. See you there!
